Mark of the Potter first opened in the Spring of 1969 and is now the oldest craft shop in the same location in the State of Georgia. For over 45 years they have offered the works of quality handcrafted, contemporary stoneware pottery from their own four local artists.

The shop also offers functional pottery by more than 30 other potters, other handmade crafts including ceramic jewelry, some hand blown glass, note cards, locally oriented books and a few other crafts.

Shop for unique crafts, explore the old Grandpa Watts' Mill, enjoy the picturesque scenery, see and feed (if the water is not too warm) the “pet” trout in their natural habitat. And on Saturdays and Sundays you can observe a potter creating at the wheel or working on yesterday's pieces.

mark_of_the_potter2In the early 1930s, the Watts family built a new grist mill, using the foundations of the old Hill mill for a new generator house. The new mill quickly became a favorite spot for travelers from Atlanta to stop on their way up to the lakes, as well as a place for local farmers to grind corn into meal or feed.

Local history also notes that the mill sprouted corn upstairs for the making of mash for corn liquor. Moonshiners raced up and down Hwy 197 delivering 'shine and ingredients to and from Clarkesville during the Prohibition years and after.
